XLR8's night run second half.
« on: 12 August, 2012, 10:31:24 AM »
After having to work until 1400 i headed for the power lines at Flynn Rd to meet the crew, when i arrived they were no where to be seen so i headed towards Perth to see if i could contact them, when i got to the top of the hill i could hear them but they were too far away to hear me so i kept on going until i made contact, I turned around and followed the convoy, when we reached the first serious puddle mike headed in and promptly stopped and was recovered by jon, a little damp but ready to head on, we headed for the more challenging end of the track, a couple of the guys were game to try some of the harder sections while the rest were just happy to watch in awe when mike and jon managed one particularly challenging section, it was good to see  the variety of times that one of the muddy cuts was attempted and only the gu made it up!  after some of the crew leaving us we headed for mt observation and our dinner spot, we were Travelliing quite slowly when mike informed us that the clutch was slipping and he was in fact doing 3500 revs but forward momentum was only 40 to 50kph, we didn't go far down the "main"road before we headed bush, this track was a whole lot easier than the powerlines for those who chose the harder path along there, mike guided us to a nice flat clearing in the middle of somewhere ( must get my gps in) perfecta spot to stay overnight. there was a relaxing stop while we had dinner and a chat while Jon did some running to his rear bumper which got his taillight back in and working! after that we headed along a few dirt tracks with mikes clutch getting worse, we finally hit the bitumen and aired up, we then had a steady trip back to Perth rolling mike with his slipping clutch, there was no mistaking the smell on a couple of the longer hills but he was adamant that " while it has forward propulsion she will be driven" after a slow but relaxing drive back howzit peeled off at Mundaring and I left at Scott street while the others continued to the freeway to find their way home, all in all a great trip, thanks Mike.

Mundaring Powerlines First Half

Well after getting stuck at work longer than i wanted to i was the last to arrive for a change to KFC Mundaring where i meet up with TheFlyingBadger, Howezit, AlmostDun, 1bbq, Grahame, Bigtroll65 and offcourse our trip leader Xlr8. After our trip meeting we rolled out of KFC Mundaring and headed to the water tanks at the start of the powerlines where well all aired down.
We departed at around 1.15 and started to make our journey up the powerlines track looking for some mud and some more interesting lumpy bits, as per usual we came across a Prado with its bonnet up after trying one of the deeper water crossing to the left hand side of the track, all thou there hadnít been much rain lately the water crossing just seem to be getting stupidly deeper every  year we go.
We kept on moving forward till we got to the Cole road hill climbs to find that the left hand side track had now been graded and was now the chicken track, Xlr8 showed us an interesting track to the right and a few of us (Xlr8, TheFlyingBadger, Gqswb and howezit ) gave it a shot to find that it was surprisingly easy so we decided to drive back up it and try one of the other tracks on the way out as well.
As we continued on Stropp joined us. We came across a nice big puddle where our trip leader Xlr8 decided to have a shot, He was doing well but got stuck at just over half way, never mind shoes off and jumped out the window and hook the snatch strap on the front were Badger was eagerly waiting to carry out the recovery, once out the other side all the doors were opened and the car was left to drain out.  Next in line to prove that it wasnít impossible was Howezit where he made it thru with out any dramas and then the flyingbadger went thru as well.

2 newbies/visitors and the rest are members. Was a great day and I had a blast although the repairs list is a bit bigger than I'd have hoped. The clutch going was only a matter of time and I've been putting off replacing the thrust bearing for too long anyway. but while I was under there I found a couple of the springs had dropped out and haven't reseated properly so they'll need doing and the carpets are a nightmare :(

Sorry to hear you have so many repairs to do Mike. The carpet and interior would be a real pain.
Good to see a few more members and potentials  :D
