Howezits Gibb River Road Adventure June 2020

What:Gibb River Road

Where: A drive along the Gibb River Road, Kimberley, travelling west to east, taking in most of the gorges and waterfalls.
   
When: Wed 3rd June 2020 to Sunday 28th June 2020.

Who: Anyone.

Trip Leader: Graham Howe (Howezit)

Terrain:
1 - Relatively Easy (Beginners)
2 - Moderate to Easy
3 - Moderate
4 - Moderate to Serious
5 - Serious and Endurance


Rating out of 5 will be?: 3: Biggest issue is corrugations.

Distance: Approx:
2,500 km to the start
1,000 km along the GRR including detours
3,200 km back home

Description: The idea is to spend 3 days getting there, 19 days on the GRR and 4 days to get home.
All the major gorges and stations will be visited, including a trip to Mitchell Falls.

Car Limit: 3.. maybe 4.. but we’ll see.

Dog Friendly: No. Not all stations and campsites allow dogs.

Meeting Point: TBA

Meeting time: TBA

Comms: Primary: UHF CH 20. Secondary: UHF CH 18

What To Bring: TBA, but there’s enough info on the internet to give you an idea so long.

I'll note here what my current plans are.
I'll be doing "my thing" anyway, but anyone who joins is free to join/leave/rejoin/etc the trip as you please.
You may want to skip bits or stay longer at others..
Obviously any ideas are welcome so my own trip may change accordingly :)

3 Days: Perth to Leopold Downs Rd free camp : 2,500 kms

Camp: Leopold Downs Rd free camp

Day 1
Tunnel Creek (Day use only)
Widjana Gorge
Windjana Gorge NP camping - 2 camp grounds - showers, flushing toilets, drinking water, fireplaces

Camp: Windjana Gorge NP

Day 2
At Widjana Gorge
Do shorter of 2 walks. Longer one achieves nothing extra to see.
Widjana Gorge NP to Mt Hart

Camp: Mt Hart

Day 3
2 or 3 small gorge walks.. 1 proper walk ??

Camp: Mt Hart

Day 4
Mt Hart to Lennard Gorge
Rough road access
2km return walk
- 30 min walk to the gorge
- 15 min climb to the water

Lennard Gorge to Silent Grove campsite

(Some say Bell Gorge and Lennard Gorge most magnificent gorges in Kimberly)

Camp: Silent Grove

Day 5
Bell gorge. Top pool and slightly longer bottom pool.. nice swimming hole.
2km return walk

Camp: Silent Grove

Day 6
Silent Grove campsite to Charnley River Station (Beverly Springs Rd off GRR)

Camp: Charnley River Station

Day 7
Charnley River Station
Grevillea, Dillie and/or Junction gorges

Camp: Charnley River Station

Day 8
Charnley River Station to Manning gorge.
Visit Adcock Gorge along the way
Visit Galvans Gorge along the way
- Short bushwalk to granite outcrops and lily-filled waterways (Galvans Gorge)
At Manning, sundowners and swim first night by a little beach (30 seconds from camp)

Camp: Manning River

Day 9
Walk to Manning gorge (fair hike), explore the falls, aboriginal rock art and swim in pools

Camp: Manning River

Day 10
Manning River to Drysdale River Station, detouring off GRR onto Kalumburu Rd, stopping for swim at Gibb River crossing
Gotta eat Kimberley burger at Drysdale. Book on arrival.

Camp: Drysdale River Station

Day 11
Drysdale River Station to Mitchell Falls camping area. Enjoy the long, slow, rough drive!

Camp: Mitchell Falls camping area

Day 12
Hike in / Heli out to see falls (www.helispirit.com.au)

Camp: Mitchell Falls camping area

Day 13
Mitchell Falls camping area, back to Drysdale

Camp: Drysdale River Station

Day 14
Drysdale on to GRR, to Home Valley Station, crossing Durack River on the way

Camp: Home Valley Station

Day 15
Horse Riding tour to Cockburn Ranges

Camp: Home Valley Station

Day 16
Home Valley Station to El Questro, crossing Pentecost River on the way

Camp: El Questro

Day 17
Emma Gorge

(I've done ELQ to death last year, so hence I'll not be here long)

Camp: El Questro

Day 18
El Questro to Kununarra

NOW we're just hightailing it home!

Drive to free camp at Spring Creek opposite Bungle Bungle t/off

Return 3 days

Day 1
Drive to Stanley 24 hr rest area (on the road before 6am)

Day 2
Drive to Gasgoyne River South rest area (on the road before 6am)

Day 3
Drive to Perth (on the road before 6am)

Hi Howezit.
Thank you for the long, forward notice. 
I can only join you if the annual June "budget season" at my work changes to be May or July or even August perhaps.
I'm not holding my breath and will only know ~ March 2020 if it is possible for me to join you.

For anyone watching this post...
For a combination of work and surgial reasons, this trip has a relativelyhigh percentage chance of being cancelled/postponed.
Just a heads up....
You're never too old to learn something stupid.
